Will a facelift fix my wrinkles?
A facelift corrects the folds and sagging skin of the lower part of your face that are the result of the effects of gravity. But a facelift should not be used to correct the superficial wrinkles and lines that result from changes in your skin. These are often best addressed with skin resurfacing procedures such as laser resurfacing or chemical peels. We also often use fat injections to restore some of your youthful contours in conjunction with the facelift.
How will a facelift improve my appearance?
A facelift can provide you with a refreshed look by improving the contour of your jawline and neck, making you look younger and more energetic. Although the enhancement may seem dramatic, it remains natural in appearance. Patients are typically pleasantly surprised to see that people in their lives are unable to put a finger on what has led to this rejuvenated appearance.
What is the facelift procedure like?
Your facelift procedure will typically be performed using either local anesthetic with sedation or general anesthetic, depending on the specific situation. Dr. Yalamanchili uses a creative minimal-incision technique in which small incisions that hide within the natural contours around the ear are used to perform the facelift. This technique allows him to avoid extending the incision into the sideburn area. Unlike some of the typically used facelift techniques, this avoids altering the hairline and allows the patient to maintain any hairstyle he or she wishes to have. In some cases, small secondary incisions may be necessary under the chin. The sagging skin, muscles, and other tissue in your lower face and neck are tightened and any excess is removed. The fat can often be repositioned or transferred to give a more youthful appearance.
What is recovery from a facelift like?
You will need to rest for at least the first day after your surgery. You should plan on having someone to help take care of you for several days after surgery. You will likely have some discomfort, usually describes as “tightness,” although you will be given prescription medication to control it. Your sutures will be removed several days after surgery. You can typically return to work after 10 to 14 days, and you should be able to return to most vigorous activities 3 to 4 weeks after surgery. It is very important to avoid prolonged sun exposure for 3 months after surgery to ensure your incisions heal into subtle traces and not pigmented lines. Please see our postoperative care page for more information on surgical recovery. We believe that the care provided after the procedure is as important as the procedure itself, so we remain integrally involved in your postoperative care.
When will the results of my surgery be visible?
The amount of swelling and bruising varies widely between patients, but you can expect these signs to subside gradually over the course of 2 to 3 weeks after surgery in most cases. Results will continue to improve over time. By the third month after surgery, they will be close to final, but subtle changes will continue until about a year after surgery.
