Procedures Performed – Otoplasty:
This is an example of an otoplasty (i.e. ear reshaping). This young man had prominent ears that he felt stuck out too far from the side of his head. This is not an infrequent finding, and many times this is treated while the patient is still a child—usually at 7 or 8 years of age. Certainly this patient’s ears were something that had bothered him since childhood, but he did not have the opportunity to address it until he was older. An otoplasty was performed to reposition his ears in a more desirable orientation.
From the posterior view, the extent that the ears protrude from the head can be fully appreciated. When my patients return for the post-operative visit w/a shorter hairstyle or w/their hair up (as they often do), it is a gratifying feeling—as I know that they’ve gained an incredible amount of self-confidence.
