What is RADIESSE?

RADIESSE is a compound, injectable facial filler made up of two parts. First, it is a methylcellulose gel. Methylcellulose is a common food thickener that is very safe. The gel smoothes the delivery of the more important part of the filler: the calcium hydroxylapatite (CHA) microspheres. CHA has long been used as a bone graft material and also has an excellent safety record.

How it Works

After injection, the gel is quickly absorbed, but the microspheres take longer to absorb. Instead, your body fills in around them with collagen, a natural compound that your face tends to lose with age. Eventually, the microspheres will be absorbed, but in the meantime, you will see significant improvement in your facial appearance.

Advantages and Disadvantages of RADIESSE

The main advantage of RADIESSE is its durability. In a recent clinical study, approximately 80% of patients were still seeing results one year after treatment. Other facial fillers can be highly variable in their longevity, but with RADIESSE, most people do get results that are long-lasting.

Another advantage of RADIESSE is that it can be injected deep into the tissues where it can actually be used for facial reshaping. It is an ideal non-permanent solution for people considering facial contouring such as cheek implants or chin implants. Since RADIESSE will dissolve over time, this treatment allows you to see what your results might be like without committing to the permanent results of surgery.

The main disadvantage of RADIESSE is that its spheres can lead to uneven skin contour if injected too close to the surface or in places where the skin is very thin. Working with an experienced plastic surgeon can avoid this from happening.
