Kybella

One of the most common facial cosmetic concerns that our patients have is the dreaded “double chin”. This double chin can be caused by excess fat and/or loss of elasticity in the skin under the chin area. This excess fat and loose skin hang outward, creating an unflattering profile. A double chin makes people appear older or overweight. Many times, this excess fat is genetic and is difficult to lose even with exercise and weight loss.

For many years, surgical liposuction has been the only solution to address a double chin. Although it is very effective, it is an invasive procedure that requires some “downtime” during recovery. However, we now have a new non-surgical option that has been FDA approved for treating the excess fat under the chin: Kybella.

Kybella is a minimally invasive, injectable procedure designed to help people reduce excess fat in their chin and neck region. This treatment has rapidly gained popularity thanks to its long-term results and minimal recovery time.

How Does Kybella Work?

Our body naturally produces a substance called deoxycholic acid, which helps absorb fat. Kybella is the synthetic form of that substance and can be used to decrease the amount of fat under the chin.

Kybella works by breaking down the membranes of fat cells found under the chin (the submental area). After the cell membranes have been broken, the cells release their contents into the bloodstream; the contents are then safely and naturally metabolized by the body. This results in an overall reduction in volume for the submental area.

After extensive clinical trials, Kybella received the approval of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 2015 for the indication of treating excess fat in the submental area.

What is the Kybella Procedure Like?

Topical and local anesthesia is typically applied in order to make the procedure more comfortable for the patient. Kybella injections are directly administered into the treatment area under a patient’s chin by Dr. Yalamanchili. Swelling and redness can be expected in the area that was treated for up to a week. However, most of our patients return to normal daily activity within a day or two. Depending on the amount of excess fat, this treatment may need to be repeated—sometimes up to 4-5 sessions that are 4-6 weeks apart.

Am I a Good Candidate for Kybella?

Kybella is recommended for people who are developing, or already have a double chin due to excess submental fat. In a situation where there is a significant amount of loose, inelastic skin, Kybella might not be the best treatment. In this case, Dr. Yalamanchili will discuss other potential options to address the excess, loose skin. As a facial plastic surgeon with extensive experience in both surgical and non-surgical treatment options, Dr. Yalamanchili can help tailor a treatment plan that will best fit your needs.

There are some situations in which Kybella is contraindicated in patients. In rare instances, some people may be allergic to deoxycholic acid. Also, patients who suffer from certain thyroid disorders or swollen lymph nodes might not be eligible for this treatment.
